Shut the system off, let it thaw, and replace the filter. If it freezes again, you have a problem that needs a technician, and running it frozen risks compressor damage.

Refrigerant standards are phased out every few years, and once a system's refrigerant is on its way out, recharges and parts get steadily more expensive. A good rule: if the repair costs more than a third of replacement and the unit is past ten Las Vegas summers, replacement usually wins. We will give you the honest math either way.
